Susan
Dunkerley
Unlike
other photographers who manipulate light to create a perfect picture, Susan
Dunkerley relinquishes all control over her light source. Instead, she
relies only on daylight to shine through her studio window and to provide
the direct light source for her three-dimensional still-lifes. Dunkerley
creates each still-life using her window as the frame for the final image.
The image is a compilation common domestic items she gathers. The daylight,
or lack thereof, illuminates the scene from behind. Dunkerley watches the
natural light change the composition’s tonal values. The brief moment
when the light finds the right balance between the bright lights and dark
shadows, Dunkerley clicks the shutter. She then dissembles the still-life.
What remains is both a documentation of the moment and more importantly,
an image which opens us up to a new world and puts our imagination into
motion.
