Work in progress from the studio of Gabriel Martinez

A Summer Evening: Cocktails with Gabriel Martinez
Tuesday, June 23, 2015; 5:30pm - 7:30pm
$150 per person

Sip cocktails, enjoy delicious hors d'oeuvres and hear all the exciting details of The Print Center's upcoming Centennial celebration: The Print Center 100. Mounted from September - December 2015, it will be a city-wide event with dozens of partners featuring 100 individual things, from major exhibitions and new artist commissions to archival treasures, each which reverberates with our 100 year commitment to sharing the most intriguing and ambitious uses of photography and print.

One of three exhibitions at The Print Center will be dedicated to the exceptional work of Philadelphia-based, Cuban-American artist Gabriel Martinez. His use of photography as a means of celebrating, memorializing and re-contextualizing history is especially meaningful as The Print Center looks back on its own 100 year history. His exhibition Bayside Revisited will include newly commissioned hybrid prints, an immersive film projection installation and new site specific works which reflect Martinez's interest in the history of the iconic gay mecca, Fire Island. Martinez and John Caperton, the Jensen Bryan Curator, will give a preview of the exhibition and share how this exceptional exhibition was planned and developed.

Book Launch and Signing with Daniel Traub

Tuesday, December 16, 2014; 6:00 pm, Admission is FREE
www.danieltraub.net

Join us for a conversation between Daniel Traub and The Print Center's Jensen Bryan Curator, John Caperton, followed by a book signing. North Philadelphia, published by Kehrer Verlag, offers a compelling glimpse into an urban area that is emblematic of many such regions throughout the United States, hovering between decay and possibility. A body of work Traub made between 2008 and 2013, North Philadelphia combines images of dilapidated homes, vacant lots, and desolate street corners with portraits of the neighborhood's residents to present a multifaceted look at the landscape and people of North Philadelphia. Many of these images were included in Traub's solo show Lots at The Print Center in 2011.

Conversation: 6:00 - 6:45pm
Book Signing and Reception: 6:45 - 7:30pm

From a review by Adam Bell in Photo-eye: "Daniel Traub's North Philadelphia is not only a portrait of this often misunderstood neighborhood, but it is also a deeply personal exploration of a community Traub has long known and loved... Traub does not mask the difficulties of the area, but the work is not without hope or dignity... formally beautiful and elegantly conceived."

Public Collectors: A Conversation with Marc Fischer
Saturday, April 5, 2014

Public Collectors, Malachi Ritscher, 2014 Whitney Biennial installation view

Founded in 2007 by Marc Fischer, Public Collectors is intended “to engage in collaborations with others who are dedicated to preserving the kind of cultural materials that museums and other institutions often disregard.” Fischer will introduce Public Collectors and discuss its recent project for the 2014 Whitney Biennial, which focuses on the life of Malachi Ritscher (1954–2006). From the early 1980s until his death, Ritscher recorded (with the artists’ permission) thousands of free-jazz, experimental, underground and improvised concerts in Chicago. For the Whitney Biennial, Public Collectors' project features objects, artifacts, and ephemera connected to Ritscher's life that were borrowed from the creative community that he was part of. Ritscher, an anti-war activist, immolated himself in protest of the Iraq War in 2006. In a free publication, which will be available at this event, Fischer explores the nuances of Ritscher's creative and documentarian practice, the complex issues surrounding his death, and the preservation of the recordings he left behind.

Lecture: Lithuanian Photography in the 20th & 21st Centuries: Eglė Deltuvaitė
Thursday, November 7, 2013

Lithuania has a vibrant and flourishing photographic culture, which embodies the European sensibility of inclusiveness and experimentation. Contemporary Lithuanian photography reveals the influence of classic traditions which originated with the Lithuanian school of the 1960s, as well as elements of the "aesthetics of boredom" and social landscapes of the 1980s, and the recent hybrids of neo-conceptualism, documentary and staged photography.

Eglė Deltuvaitė is one of the foremost photography experts in Lithuania. She is currently the acting director at International Cultural Programme Centre in Vilnius. After receiving her Master’s Degree in UNESCO Cultural Management in 2008, she became Cultural Policy Chair at Vilnius Art Academy in Lithuania. She has worked with the Union of Lithuanian Art Photographers and coordinated numerous international cultural programs.

This event is co-presented with the Lithuanian Consulate in Philadelphia. This is the first time this lecture on Lithuanian photography will be presented in the US. Space is limited. Please RSVP to evandenberg@printcenter.org or 215-735-6090 x1

Chronic Town Press and Justin Myer Staller

www.chronictownpress.tumblr.com
Incorporating innovative processes and safe studio methods has been a part of Justin Myer Staller's printmaking practice since 2003. In 2010 he started publishing prints that highlighted these techniques; seeking out artists whose work would both benefit from, and demonstrate, the wide range of possibilities these contemporary practices could offer. Publishing under Chronic Town Press, Staller primarily uses ImagOn, a photopolymer film, printing the developed plates with water-based inks and solvent-free etching methods. The business side of the press is run like a small independent music label; all profits from the sale of the editions are split evenly between printer and artist.

Chronic Town Press is working on raising awareness within the printmaking community about the importance and versatility of safer contemporary practices while simultaneously creating desirable, affordable and well crafted editions. Chronic Town Press has published work from Daniel Danger, Leah Allen-Costa, Eva Wylie, Emilia Brintnall and in September 2013 will release a new edition by Katie Murken.

Lydia Panas is an award winning photographer whose work is regularly exhibited internationally. Panas’ work has been published widely in periodicals such as The New York Times Magazine, Photo District News, Popular Photography, German GEO, San Francisco Chronicle and the Wall Street Journal blog. Panas received her MFA in photography from New York University / International Center of Photography, NY and her BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts, NY. She is also the recipient of a Whitney Museum Independent Study Fellowship in 2011. Her work is held in numerous private and public collection museums including the Brooklyn Museum, Center for Photography Woodstock, Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.

Panas’ first monograph The Mark of Abel, published by Kehrer Verlag, received a Best Books Nomination from Photo Eye Magazine in 2011, and was named in the Photo District News’ PHOTO ANNUAL Books of 2012, as well as a Top Ten Coffee Table Book of 2012 by the Daily Beast.

The series After Sargent was inspired by a trip to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston to see John Singer Sargent’s Four Daughters of Edward Darley Boit. “The painting itself is amazing, and I lingered in the Sargent galleries and studied the single portraits as well,” she states in a recent interview with Lenscratch. “I was most affected by Sargent’s attention to the spirit of his models and his own response to them. I find his most successful works to be the ones that feel like photographs. My photographs from this series don’t look like Sargent’s paintings, but they are inspired by the acuity of his psychological connection to his models”.

Thursday, October 25, 2012

2008 Delancey Place, Philadelphia

Open Door is a program of The Print Center to engage audiences through unique behind-the-scenes tours at Philadelphia’s most intriguing cultural sites.

The Rosenbach Museum & Library was founded in 1954 through a testamentary gift by Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach (1876-1952) and his brother, Philip (1863-1953). Renowned dealers in books, manuscripts and fine art, the brothers played a central role in the development of private libraries that later became our nation’s most important public collections of rare books. The brothers’ own personal collection, now the core of the Rosenbach, features treasures the brothers were unable to part with. The collection has since grown to include the papers of poet Marianne Moore, Bram Stoker’s notes for Dracula, and the drawings of Maurice Sendak and now contains 400,000 items.

Join us for a tour of the Rosenbach brothers’ 19th-century townhouse, including Dr. Rosenbach’s rare book library, Philip Rosenbach’s decorative art collection, and the re-creation of modernist poet Marianne Moore’s Greenwich Village living room. After the tour, you are free to explore any ongoing shows in our galleries at your leisure, including Maurice Sendak: A Legacy and Sendak & Colbert: Objects, Interviews… and Poles!

Morning Session 9:00-11:00am
Paper negative demonstration including solarization, tearing, cutting, stapling and drawing on the negative before making a print.

Afternoon Session 1:30pm-3:50pm
Toning and chemicalization demonstration including the use of bleach, selenium and tray cleaner.

The workshop is free, however space is limited. Participants need darkroom familiarity. Attendees can choose to attend the morning or afternoon session or both. Attendees can bring negatives or prints to work from or samples will be provided. Contact Eli VandenBerg to sign up: 215-735-6090 x1 or evandenberg@printcenter.org.

BOOK RELEASE AND READING

Revolution as an Eternal Dream: the Exemplary Failure of the Madame Binh Graphics Collective
by Chicago artist Mary Patten

Mary Patten Poster

FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 2012, 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Mary Patten
's Revolution as an Eternal Dream: the Exemplary Failure of the Madame Binh Graphics Collective examines the political practice and visual propaganda of a now-obscure women's poster, printmaking, and street art collective based in New York City between 1975 and 1983, calling up the perpetual desire for revolution, but also the frailty of such dreams. Published by Half Letter Press, this 84-page book is with full color graphics throughout and includes a preface by the writer and critic Lucy Lippard as well as an afterword by the artist and writer Gregory Sholette. The book will be available for purchase in our Gallery Store that day.

Mary Patten is a visual artist, video-maker, writer, educator and occasional curator with a long and checkered history of political engagement, solidarity and activism. For the last 27 years she has lived and worked in Chicago, after finishing a one-year sentence on Rikers Island for resisting arrest at a notorious anti-apartheid protest. She teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is a founding member of Feel Tank Chicago, "politicizing depression since 2003".

This event is co-presented with Half Letter Press.

SPECIAL EVENT

100 Years in 2015
The Print Center Honors: Educational Excellence

Please Join Us for a Special Evening Honoring
Sean Buffington & Allan Edmunds
Tuesday, October 25, 6:00pm Cocktails, 7:00pm Dinner

Sean Buffington has been the President and CEO of the University of the Arts since 2007. From its beginnings in 1876 as the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, UArts has played a major role in supporting arts education in Philadelphia. Under Buffington’s tenure UArts has solidified its role as one of the most dynamic academic institutions in the city. Buffington has actively fostered partnerships with other Philadelphia institutions. Dating back at least to the 1930s, a close relationship has been enjoyed between The Print Center and UArts’ Printmaking, Photography, Graphic Arts and Book Arts Departments. Many faculty and alumni have been Print Center exhibitors, Board members, lecturers and workshop leaders and dedicated volunteers. Deep connections existed between renowned early faculty members such as Benton Spruance and Jerome Kaplan and such ties continue today. We celebrate the collaborative relationship The Print Center and UArts have enjoyed through almost a century of connection.

Allan Edmunds is the Founder and President of the renowned Brandywine Workshop. Since its inception in 1972 Brandywine has become an international center for printmaking and a resource for art educators. In 2012, the 40th Anniversary of Brandywine will be celebrated with an exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. For more than twenty-eight years Edmunds has taught at Brandywine, as well as at the high school and college level, and has served as a visiting artist nationally and internationally. Through its education programs, the workshop promotes printmaking as a fine art and a medium that encourages collaborative learning. Born out of Edmunds’ early years as an instructor for Prints in Progress, The Print Center's education program which brought together practicing artists and children through printmaking, Brandywine connects practicing artists, educators and local youth to create an environment for learning and mentoring that embraces cultural diversity and the production of high quality, limited edition prints. The Print Center continues that tradition today through our Artists-in-Schools Program. We are pleased to honor Edmunds’ lifelong commitment to printmaking and education.

Tickets: $250 per person. Click here to purchase tickets online.

Join Emily Steinberg as she reads from her new graphic memoir. Graphic Therapy offers a view into life as an artist, the tribulations of dating, weight obsessions, Nazi nightmares, the overall neurotic craziness of growing up Jewish and the absurdity of life as we know it - all presented with Steinberg’s distinctive sense of humor and style. This will surely be an afternoon filled with art and laughter! The artist will also sign copies of her book, which is available for sale in The Print Center Gallery Store.

Saturday, November 13, 2:00 pm
Anni Altshuler and The Print Center have collaborated on a new line of silkscreened kitchen textiles called Best and Better. Join us for afternoon tea where we will debut this amazing work! Altshuler, a recent graduate of The University of the Arts and an artist member of Space 1026, finds inspiration in the pattern, charm and feminine narrative found in French toiles, Japanese woodblock prints and fashion that verges on costume. The loosely autobiographical characters and objects in Altshuler’s work reflect her daily routines and relationships. The characters, though not triumphant, are clearly working towards finding their way in the world.

Born in Camden, NJ, Bill Walton (1931-2010) is best known for his small minimalist sculptures, often mounted to the wall and made up of both constructed and found materials. Walton’s father was a commercial lithographer and Walton himself was trained as printmaker and worked for Eugene Feldman at Falcon Press in the early 1970s. Walton had a distinguished career as a teacher of printmaking at Moore College of Art & Design and Drexel University. Early in his career Walton exhibited printed works, including a solo exhibition at The Print Center in 1975. As he began to exhibit more sculptural work, Walton concurrently made works that while technically are not prints explore the issues raised by printmaking.

One writer compared his works, with their clear links to minimalist art of the 1960s, to “hard won, deeply imbued physical haikus.” The Print Center’s current exhibition Tracings / Transfers / Copies / Forgeries focuses on the influence that printmaking had on a number sculptural works.

His work has been included in exhibitions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; Margaret Thatcher Projects, New York; Patricia Sweetow Gallery, San Francisco; Fleisher/Ollman Gallery, Philadelphia; Schmidt-Dean Gallery, Philadelphia; Locks Gallery, Philadelphia; Cava Gallery, Philadelphia; and Larry Becker Contemporary Art, Philadelphia. A monograph of Walton’s work was published by Arcadia University Art Gallery in 2006.

Julie Courtney has been an independent curator since 1991, and a long-time friend and colleague of Bill Walton. She was founding director of Temple Gallery and was consulting curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art from 1989 – 1991; and she curated exhibitions for Walton for both organizations. In 1995 she co-curated Prison Sentences: The Prison as Site/The Prison as Subject, which initiated Eastern State Penitentiary’s contemporary art program and her endeavors in commissioning site-specific projects in unusual spaces. In 1996 she curated Points of Departure: Art on the Line, temporary site-specific projects in train stations from 30th Street Station to Bryn Mawr. In 2005 she presented two major works: Pandemonium, at Eastern State Penitentiary and The Lost Meeting, at Abington Art Center. In 2006, Courtney commissioned meta Metasequoia for the Morris Arboretum and curated Inside/Out: Sculpture at Evergreen, an exhibition of ten site-relevant projects at John Hopkins University, Baltimore. Most recently, Julie curated Mark Dion's Travels of William Bartram – Reconsidered at Bartram's Garden and Bill Morrison’s Release at Eastern State Penitentiary. In 2010 Courtney was engaged by Community College of Philadelphia to commission two permanent public art projects which will be realized in 2011 and 2012. Julie has also given generously of her time and energy for the benefit of many cultural organizations through extensive board, committee and volunteer participation.

Special Reception

Wednesday, May 26, 5:00-7:00pm
Bill Walton (1931-2010)

We are deeply saddened at the loss of our friend, Philadelphia artist Bill Walton who passed away on April 9. Walton was a widely known and highly regarded artist whose work was shown internationally. While best known as a sculptor, Walton was also an accomplished printmaker, and spent many years teaching printmaking at Moore College of Art & Design and Drexel University. On May 1, The Print Center will open Tracings / Transfers / Copies / Forgeries, an exhibition that brings together a group of Walton's work made over the last thirty years, all of which deal with the conceptual issues and technical processes of printmaking. Walton passed away while planning this exhibition for The Print Center. This will be the second solo exhibition of Walton's work mounted at The Print Center - the first was presented in 1975. While we mourn his passing, we are grateful for the opportunity to share Walton's insightful work. A Patron Party (details to be announced) will be held in honor of Walton's last work Broken Wing, which he created especially for The Print Center. A special reception celebrating the exhibition and the life of this extraordinary artist will take place on Wednesday, May 26 from 5:00-7:00pm.

Did U.S. government policies make it possible? How much damage has the aftermath of Abu Ghraib had on America's credibility as a defender of freedom and human rights around the world? Acclaimed filmmaker Rory Kennedy looks beyond the headlines to investigate the psychological and political context in which torture occurred.
